Subatomic Physics - 100 Not Out and Still Going Strong

چکیده
* E-mail : [email protected] On the occasion of the birth centenary of the discovery of electron, I discuss its role in the area of Elementary Particle Physics. I emphasize that the discovery of electron marks the end of the speculation era lasting more than 2500 years. The key developments leading to the discovery of electron by J.J. Thomson are briefly mentioned. The standard model is briefly mentioned and it is emphasized that no further progress beyond standard model is possible unless there is a dramatic advance in instrumentation.

O ne of the fundamental challenges in nuclear physics is to predict the properties of subatomic matter from quantum chromodynamics (QCD)—the theory describing the strong force that confines quarks into protons and neutrons, and that binds protons and neutrons together. In other words, can QCD explain why subatomic matter is stable, how it comes into being, evolves, and organizes itself, and wha...
متن کاملStatistical Review of Theses in Iran Public Universities in Medical Imaging Field
Introduction: In spite of all the researches on medical imaging, this field is still hot. It is the third major area of research, conducted in the world. Unfortunately, there is no statistical evaluation available of the student theses in Iran. It does not seem like a policy is going to be established to address this issue. Providing a statistical insight to activities done in ...
متن کاملMicrobial Contamination of Staff’s Hand while Going out of Hospital
Abstract Background and Objective: Cross-transmission of microorganisms by the hands of health care workers is considered as a main transmission route of nosocomial infections. The aim of this study was to investigate the microbial contamination of health-care worker’s hands while going out of hospital. Material and Methods: Wearing the sterile glove with liquid culture, we obtained 100 Sam...
متن کاملPerspective on This Week’s Announcement in High Energy Particle Physics and the Mechanism of Gauge Symmetry Breaking
This week, the Large Hadron Collider at CERN announced the discovery of a new boson with mass of ~125 GeV. Many have interpreted these results as evidence in favor of the Higgs boson believed to provide a mechanism for subatomic particle mass generation. However, CERN stated in their announcement that the true identity of the new boson, if confirmed, has yet to be determined. In this article, I...
متن کاملCaloGAN: Simulating 3D High Energy Particle Showers in Multi-Layer Electromagnetic Calorimeters with Generative Adversarial Networks
The precise modeling of subatomic particle interactions and propagation through matter is paramount for the advancement of nuclear and particle physics searches and precision measurements. The most computationally expensive step in the simulation pipeline of a typical experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is the detailed modeling of the full complexity of physics processes that govern t...
